Located in the middle of Washington State, Satus Indian Mission is only an afternoon’s drive from Seattle or Portland but is an entire world away from what you probably know. Jerry and My McNew have labored in this field for several years, developing ties to the people of the Yakama Indian Nation and spreading the news of Christ.

The Yakama Indian Nation is actually comprised of fourteen different Native American tribes and is the second largest reservation in Washington state. Most of the culture and traditions of the Yakamas have not been recorded; they have been passed from generation to generation, spoken to each child as they have grown up to become aware of their role in the family and tribe.

As part of their tradition, the Yakamas hold celebration feasts through the year, to offer thanks to their Creator for the first-foods that are gathered. They also hold pow-wows, drum group and Indian dancing competitions, pagents, craft exhibitions and other events that hold true to their traditional values. The Yakamas continue to dress traditionally, including head dresses, and use items that are from a western novel, like the tee-pee.

Just as Jesus did with those He taught, Jerry and My have developed relationships with the Yakama people in order to bring the message of Christ to them. During their time at Satus Indian Mission, the McNews have been able to work with several prominent members of the Yakama people, including some of the tribal leaders. These relationships bring about wonderful opportunities to share Jesus’ love to the Yakamas at some of their celebrations, dinners and events.
